Young people took centre stage at Wathaurong’s recent Flip the Vape event, an engaging community session aimed at opening honest conversations about vaping and its health impacts. Barwon Health’s Healthy Communities team and and clinical cessation staff from the Smoke free clinic were among the organisations supporting the day, joining local services, schools and families in encouraging healthier choices for young people.

The event featured hands on activities that drew steady interest from children and teens. Many were eager to learn more, with some speaking candidly about the pressures and habits within their friendship groups. One young person admitted to vaping occasionally but said they felt “overwhelmed by the thought of knowing the harms.” After chatting with staff, they chose to take home information about the BeSmokeFree cessation service.

A crowd favourite, the Spinning Wheel, once again proved to be a powerful way to spark conversations. Young people and adults lined up for a chance to win drink bottles and stress balls.

The event also created opportunities for stronger community connections, with representatives from the City of Greater Geelong, Quit and several local schools attending. These conversations may lead to ongoing collaboration to support young people’s health and wellbeing.

Wathaurong’s warm hospitality and commitment to youth empowerment set the tone for a meaningful and memorable community gathering that left participants informed, engaged and ready to keep the conversation going.
