As cooler months approach, cases of flu, COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses are rising across the community.
To ensure you and your family are protected from circulating viruses such as flu, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), now is the time to review your vaccinations and in particular, book your annual flu vaccination.
Public Health physician at the Barwon South West Public Health Unit, Dr Akhtar Hussain, urges everyone to consider getting their flu vaccination now.
“The flu is a very serious illness and each year we see a number of people hospitalised due to the flu. For vulnerable groups in the community the flu can be deadly and for others it can result in severe health effects and long recovery periods.”
“It’s important to remember that the virus changes each year. Each season we have a tailored vaccine, so it’s important to stay up-to-date with your vaccinations.
“Flu vaccination is recommended for anyone six months and older and is free under the National Immunisation Program for people considered to be at higher risk. I encourage parents to consider a flu shot for their children to ensure they are protected,” he says.
For the first time, older Australians have been abvle to access the RSV vaccine free since 15 May.
“Now is the perfect time for you to check you are up-to-date on your vaccinations and look at getting your vaccinations at the same time to save time and ensure you are protected.”
“RSV vaccination is now recommended for older adults aged over 75 years and is available free for eligible people from 15 May. Measles vaccination is also available for those who are not fully protected.”
As with all vaccinations, people are encouraged to discuss the vaccine options available to them with their health practitioner. You can also use the booster eligibility tool to determine whether you are eligible for a COVID-19 booster vaccination.
RSV, Flu, COVID-19 and measles vaccinations can also be given at the same time to those eligible.
In addition to vaccination, simple steps can help stop the spread of respiratory illnesses such as washing hands, coughing or sneezing into your elbow, wearing a mask and staying home when sick.
Doing this will help keep you and your friends, family and community well.
